What Is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic condition characterized by elevated blood glucose (sugar) levels. Glucose is the body’s primary energy source, and its regulation depends on insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. When the body does not produce enough insulin, cannot use insulin effectively, or both, glucose accumulates in the bloodstream. Over time, poorly controlled Diabetes can affect the heart, kidneys, nerves, eyes, and blood vessels.
There are three main categories discussed here: Type I Diabetes, Type II Diabetes, and pre-Diabetes. While they differ in cause and progression, all require monitoring and long-term management.
What Are the Causes of Diabetes?
Type I Diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It usually develops in childhood or early adulthood but can occur at any age. Individuals with Type I diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy.
Type II Diabetes is the most common form. It develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin and/or the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels. Risk factors include genetics, excess body weight, physical inactivity, and aging.
Pre-Diabetes occurs when blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to meet criteria for Diabetes. It is often asymptomatic but signals an increased risk of developing Type II Diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
What Are the Treatments for Diabetes?
Treatment depends on the type of Diabetes and individual patient factors.
For Type I Diabetes, management requires daily insulin administration through injections or an insulin pump. Regular blood glucose monitoring is essential, along with attention to nutrition, physical activity, and sick-day planning.
For Type II Diabetes, treatment often begins with lifestyle modification, including dietary changes, increased physical activity, and weight management. Oral medications and non-insulin injectables may be added to improve insulin sensitivity or reduce glucose production. Some patients may eventually require insulin therapy.
For Pre-Diabetes, the primary goal is prevention. Evidence shows that modest weight loss, regular exercise, and healthy eating can significantly reduce progression to Type II Diabetes. In some cases, medication may be recommended.
Across all types, routine monitoring—including blood glucose checks, hemoglobin A1c testing, blood pressure measurement, and cholesterol management—is critical to reduce long-term complications.
